Recipe Fails of 2015 cominā through!
By some magic eclipse of time, itās the last post of 2015! And what better way to ring inĀ the good vibes for 2016 than by re-living the gloppy, sad-looking, mostly green messes of the last 12 months? Right? I thought so, too.
There is usually a theme to be found within my recipe fails, and this year is no different. Iām declaring the theme of 2015 to be GREEN GONE WRONG. Yes ā all things green were the recipe fail specialty this year, probably as a result of my obsession with the *delicious* green recipes of the year, like the Magic Green Sauce, the JalapeƱo Cilantro Dressing, the Kale Pesto, and beyond.
But there is a fine line with the green foods, and I crossed itĀ just a few too many times.
So grab a coffee or a tea or a leftover Christmas cookie (please tell me you have the ones where the two Ritz crackers are spread with peanut butter and dipped in chocolate and sprinkles? no?! is this a tacky Midwest thing?) and pull up a chair. I mean, seriously ā get comfortable. At this point, you might as well just be sitting in my house on a pile of my laundry examining all the little tufts of stray dog hair around our baseboard. Thatās just howĀ much weāre about to be up in each othersā business.

To warm us up, letās take a peek at the fails that happened in a few other categories of life before hitting up the recipes. Just to get in the spirit, you know?
Starting us off right isĀ a classic foodĀ photography fail.

I could try to convince you that that was actually a delicious meal or I could laugh until I cryĀ at everything about this photo.
ā¦those tacos WERE really good, though.
Another 2015 personal fail in the fashion category would be oneĀ of aĀ wearing-a-cape-as-a-shirt variety.

I made my grand entrance and Bjork said: āOh! ā¦youāre wearing your cape today.ā
Yes, dear one. THAT is how good I look in a cape.
Then there were the heart-wrenching facial expression fails of 2015 that were conveniently documented with expensive DSLR camera equipment during our photography workshops. š
Please tell me you know this moment: when you did you hair and actually got dressed and feel like you look pretty good for once in your life, and then you see pictures of yourself and realize that you look like this:

I haveĀ no words, really.
But as evidenced by the picture of me possibly acting out a wormĀ in the bottom right of the collage, thankfully Iām the kind of person who DOESNāT EVEN NEED WORDS.
Now that youāre warmed up,Ā andĀ before I realize what a terrible act of oversharing this really is, letās getĀ to the good stuff!
Recipe fails of 2015, coming atcha!
#1: Palak Aloo

Starting strong with the green theme. āļø
If you havenāt had it, Palak Aloo is one of Indiaās most delicious contributions to life as we know it and you need to find a restaurant that does it right and treat yoself with some naan and basmati rice STAT.
But a word of warning -> the palak aloo craving is all fun and games until you start attemptingĀ make it at home, at which point there is a 99% chance that you will find yourselfĀ inĀ an all-consuming Nickelodeon Slime situation.
UnnaturallyĀ green, watery, and not delicious. *sits in corner and cries*
#2: Grilled Apricots

Involving: amateur (š) grill supervision, a big fat minute or two of sheer panic, a box of baking soda, a patch of dead grass, a favorite grill pan laid to rest along with its charred black apricots, and an immediate purchase of a fire extinguisher via Amazon so we never again come that close to burning down our house. All for some grilled apricots.
If we want to take it to the ultimate fail level, letās talk about the fact that this happened WHILE we hadĀ the three kiddosĀ living with us this summer.

#3: Avocado Dressing

OrrrĀ curdled broccoli soup swamp water? WHY is it chunky? I had visions of a silky-smooth dressing and ended up with something more like a sandy-bottomed lake.
Healthy fats, tho!
#4: Cauliflower Burgers

Ummm, what? Who makes burgers out of cauliflower and quinoa? Sometimes I canāt even with myself.Ā So annoying.
This combo absolutelyĀ fell apart like dirt in my mouth when I took the first bite. And at about three bites in, it sort of just became one with the bun. One big soft, mushy, crumbly burger wannabe.
Donāt be mad ā I wanted this to work so badly that I actually DID FIX THE RECIPE and they are actually really delicious (I added cheese, so obviously)Ā and Iām going to post them sometime in January.Ā But just because I eventually will post the fixed up recipe doesnāt change the fact the their origins are shady. VERRRRY shady.
#5: Falafel Part One

FOR THE LOVE. I cannot evenĀ believe for one second that I put those slimy green patties in the pan thinking I would seriously want to eat them.
āHere, letās fry them up a little oil.ā
This picture + the word āpattiesā + the vision of myself preparing to put this in my mouth⦠gah. I need to lie down.
And that brings us to theĀ moment when things go from grossā¦
#6: Falafel Part Two

ā¦to Level: Needs-A-Barf-Bag with one flip of the spatula.
Why were thereĀ peas in there, you guys? PEAS. Green peas. No no no no no. Lock me up forever.
Itās really, really rare for us to completely throw food without even taking more than one single bite, butĀ SO LONG, FALAFEL. And hello,Ā finger photo bomb. Itās only fitting.
#7: Perfectly Seared Scallops

Well hey there,Ā redĀ crusty junk in the pan!
Thatās right, RED. Rough, gritty, stuck-on, red. Apparently the scallops had time to RUSTĀ real quick while they were in there for a three-minuteĀ sear?
Believe it or not, this was BEFORE the I sought help from the Martha tutorial.
#8: Apple Fritters

The fact that these were at one point going to be called APPLE FRITTERS⦠it hurts my heart. I take back any and all association I might have made with between my beloved apple fritters and these poser biscuit blobs.
Dear Apple Fritters, PLEASEĀ FORGIVE. š Iām running back to you.
#9: FlamingĀ Popcorn

There was, in fact, a moment in time during the year 2015 that I found myself (as a 29-year old, btw)Ā standing in a kitchen holdingĀ aĀ bag of popcorn that had full-blownĀ FLAMES coming out of all sides.
This is notĀ even a recipe ā weāre talking about a push-one-button-on-the-microwave kind of a thing.
I donāt even know. I guess this is what Iāve come to.
#10:Ā ChocolateĀ Syrup

No, but wait ā SYRUP. This was supposed to be syrup.
It really was on itsĀ way to chocolatey greatness (homemade peppermint mocha!) but it had a pit stop at GAG STATUSĀ before getting there. Think heavy mud meetsĀ minty syrup and milk. Instead of dissolving, it justĀ blobbed around in the mug and ā hereās the real kicker ā it wasnāt even sweetened. No redeeming sugar to be found. Ā Ho-ho-ho and a Merry Christmas!
Not okay on so many levels.
#11: Tortellini Something Soup

Come on, you guys. IāM RIGHT HERE.
I was working with aĀ limited amount of groceries, including a few random vegetables and one lone bag of dry tortellini, which SHOULDĀ have made sense. It really should have. But somehow, rather than a healthy, resourceful tortellini soup, what I ended up with was straight-up veggie muckĀ that tasted so horrible, Iām 99% sure it wasĀ poisonous.
This witchās brew was one of the more toxicĀ foods Iāve encountered in recent memory, but Iām sorry to say that I might have even eaten a small bowl of it in ultra-hungry desperation. Eeeeee I know sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry just try to block the visual out of your mind.
Fail within a fail?Ā My specialty.

Regarding the failed falafel experiment ā THE STRUGGLE IS REAL! I have attempted to āhealthifyā falafel with similar results. I had visions of a beautiful golden brown crust, and then an interior brimming with veggies, but alas. What I got strongly resembled your green barf-bag-necessitating mess. My lesson learned is donāt add paint to a masterpiece ā falafel is delicious as is. I just needed to let it be itself. š

Love your blog, and the recipe fails are hilarious. About the Ritz cracker ācookiesā, I donāt think itās a total Midwest thing. At the summer farmerās market in Littleton, NH (thatās way north in the state), there used to be a cookie vendor who made bags of Ritz ācookiesā. The only differenceāit was peanut butter AND marshmallow Fluff spread between two salted Ritz crackers and then double-dipped in milk chocolate. They would sell out within the first hour of opening every weekend! We kept them frozen, and ate right out of the freezer. Delicious!

Iām so obsessed with these posts I NEED to remember to capture the failures for next year. The seared scallops made me lollllllāso good (but also so tragic). Most recent failure of 2015: the other day I was making cookies and I was so pumped the batter was delicious and they came out completely flat. Flat flat flat. I was stumped! I was convinced my oven was broken. ā¦.and then I realized I forgot the baking soda. Merp.
Isnāt that the worst? I have done that before by accidentally doing my math wrong, doubling the recipe but forgetting to double the flour so they were essentially a puddle of butter. š

my most recent fail comes from just a few short days ago when I was attempting to help my sister-in-law with her fancy dinner by cutting the fresh pineapple into chunks. Itās shameful to admit, I know, especially from someone whoās favorite channel is Food Network and is fairly talented (i think?) in the kitchen, but I had never cut up a fresh pineapple before. So I remembered I had seen somewhere (probably FN), to stand the fruit on end and cut the rind off vertically. That went well. Then to cut into chunksā¦. I proceeded to lay the fruit on its horizontal side and slice into circles.. problem: we were needing CHUNKS for shrimp skewers. Needless to say, the pineapple chunks were not, and we had unrecognizable bits of pineapple with our grilled (and delicious) shrimp. My sis-in-law later showed me how to properly cut into chunks.
Oh no! At least it was edible? š
